Spinning Cat regains momentum as Solana’s catcoin meta intensifies
Spinning Cat (OIIAOIIA) is gaining traction again amid a broader resurgence of feline-themed memecoins on Solana, led by the rise of Hello Kitty (KITTY) and its derivatives.
The cat-inspired token has rebounded from a recent low near $2.5 million and now trades at nearly $3.5 million, buoyed by renewed market interest, an updated community website, and growing speculation around a community-funded documentary.
Spinning Cat launched in September of 2024, drawing on the viral appeal of a looping TikTok video featuring a cat named Ethel rotating in place to a remixed vocal sample.
The meme—originally popularized via a 2019 Latin American template—gained global traction after a viral YouTube upload surpassed 240 million views, spawning music festival appearances, DJ mashups, and localized clones.
It has since become a cross-cultural phenomenon, especially in China, where the rotating cat has been featured on street screens, advertisements, and even state-sponsored tourism campaigns.
Community contributors have created an interactive website with custom remixes and and global leaderboard rankings. A more mobile-friendly interface is in the works, one contributor told Hyperstition.

Catcoins ready to pounce?
The token's resurgence comes as cat-themed memecoins reclaim market attention on Solana.
The unofficial Hello Kitty token surged to nearly $12 million in market cap on June 25 and currently trades above $8 million.
The rally has triggered new interest in adjacent cat-themed tokens such as Meow Meow Meow Meow (MEOW) and DERPY TIGER (DERPY), alongside a broader revival of Sanrio-inspired assets.
Sanrio is the Japanese entertainment company behind Hello Kitty and a range of other character franchises.

Can OIIAOIIA keep spinning?
The OIIAOIIA project centers on Ethel, the cat featured in the original meme—a blind, toothless rescue animal adopted by a family in New Jersey.
A community-funded documentary tracing the meme’s cultural trajectory is currently in early planning stages, one Spinning Cat contributor told Hyperstition.

While Spinning Cat has yet to match the explosive growth of previous Solana memecoin breakouts like LABUBU (LABUBU) or Keyboard Cat (KEYCAT), it continues to attract attention due to its strong visual identity, sustained remix activity, and relatively unconcentrated token supply.
